In our latest career blog we speak to Alex Linnell, who deals with all things ‘on the go’, supporting the Weetabix On The Go, Alpen bars and Premier Protein teams as they look to raise awareness of their products for people on the move. Alex discusses how Weetabix has given him the flexibility to maintain a work life balance, as well as his love of surfing on the Cornish coastline.
What’s your role?
I’m the New Business National Account Manager in the On The Go team. I seek out new customers and listings for our On The Go products; Breakfast Drinks, Alpen Bars & our Active Nutrition Protein range, as well as helping our current Account Managers drive new business with their customers - an extra pair of hands always helps. Working within the On The Go team can be fast paced, trying to think and act like a start-up company. It’s hard work but great fun and very rewarding. In a small team you really see the difference each individual team member adds!
How long have you been at Weetabix?
I’ve been at Weetabix for just over four years now, progressing from the field team into various roles within Head Office. I applied because I’d heard really positive things about what it’s like to work for Weetabix - a family run business with great ethics. Saying you work for Weetabix is always interesting as nearly everyone has a story or grew up with the brand and having done so myself, applying to work here was a no brainer.
What’s it like to work at Weetabix?
Fast paced and always interesting!
What do you most enjoy about working at Weetabix?
The people. I work with some brilliant people every day and from day one on the job they’ve been nothing but supportive. On a personal level the flexible working and other initiatives Weetabix offers to encourage a much better work life balance are great. Being able to make up your hours in the week and finish earlier on a Friday during July & August is a great bonus so we can get out and enjoy the longer weekend, in months when the weather ‘should’ be better!
What opportunities have you had whilst at Weetabix?
Working at Weetabix over the last four years, I have been given opportunities to learn and develop consistently across a breadth of roles. As I mentioned previously, I came from our field team, REL, into Head Office as a junior member in the Category Team, progressing to a Category Manager and then onto a National Account Manager. Each step of the way I was given time by line managers to improve myself. Being taught on the job as well as external agencies coming in to deliver courses has really helped me learn and apply what I’ve learned.
Anything you’d like to share with us about your role?
Whilst writing about being given opportunities is always an upside, grasping those opportunities and learning new skills can be a tough process sometimes, personally, but each step you look back and appreciate what you’ve learned and achieved with those skills. It gives you a positive mindset and the confidence to embrace the next learning curve and keep moving forward. Becoming a Category Manager with no experience previously, was definitely the turning point in my career, something I worked very hard towards and will always look back at.
What do you love doing outside of work?
Outside of work I love surfing and getting down the Cornish coast as much as possible with my wife, Fern, in our T4 VW. The sea, the sand, the food. We’ve always liked to get away in it as much as possible and have visited the South France and Wales as well as many other spots! Playing football for a local pub side and watching Rugby Union are two other things that I enjoy doing and which give me energy outside of work.
