Here at Weetabix one of our core values is 'We Are One Team' – ensuring we’re all working together to drive results for Weetabix. In our latest blog, Quality Improvement Manager Gillian Huckerby tells us about her recent secondment at our Corby factory and how her role involves working closely with many teams throughout the business, whilst sitting within the Central Technical team. No wonder she was recognised with the ‘Weetabix Are One Team’ Weetastar award last year!
What’s your role?
My usual role is Quality Improvement Manager for our factories. However, I recently completed a secondment as Commissioning Manager for the new extruded line at our Corby factory - I was responsible for making sure the factory is legally compliant for food safety. I have very much enjoyed working on the project, but I’m just as happy to get back to my usual role, continuing to make a difference in our Burton Latimer factories. I work within the Central Technical team, but the nature of my role means I work closely with many other teams throughout the business. It all starts with the product, and that’s where I come in!
How long have you been at Weetabix?
I’ve just celebrated my ten year anniversary at Weetabix! I remember when applying I wanted to work for a company that had a great reputation for looking after its employees and certainly I haven’t been disappointed.
What’s it like to work at Weetabix?
I have had several opportunities to move roles and gain new experiences. I’ve worked as part of the factory team and have also been based in a central role. The secondment I’ve just completed was part of my personal development plan, which sits nicely alongside the Accelerate in Business (AIB) training course I recently completed. My role at Weetabix is all about improvement and I really enjoy being able to apply that to my own skillset as well.
What do you most enjoy about working at Weetabix?
I love working for Weetabix, no two days are the same! I have been fortunate over the years to have worked across lots of areas of the business, through which I’ve increased my skills and knowledge. The level of autonomy I have been granted in my role is key to allowing me to make decisions that help improve our efficiencies and output. I’m also grateful for the support I’ve been given for my personal development, it’s really motivated me, whilst the flexible working benefit supports my personal needs.
We also have an amazing internal recognition scheme - last year I won the ‘Weetabix Are One team’ Weetastar of the year, I’m very proud of this.
What opportunities have you had whilst at Weetabix?
The secondment has given me the biggest development opportunity in my ten year employment at Weetabix. I worked closely with areas of the business that I hadn’t previously, which has increased my internal network and hopefully given me even more ideas for future improvement opportunities.
Anything you’d like to share with us about your role?
As a commissioning manager you are often brought into a project towards the end, where as I’ve been involved in our Corby project from the beginning, it’s been a privilege to see this project from start to finish. I worked closely with the project management and procurement teams to ensure the right solutions were always in place for us to achieve our project goals. When one of our customers visited they said that this was the best cereal factory they had ever seen – I’m really proud to have been part of this.
What do you love doing outside of work?
I love skiing and manage to go a few times most years. I’ve just discovered that I enjoy watching cricket and went to a couple of the world cup games last year, although I’m not sure I’ll ever understand all the rules! I also like to cook and experiment whenever I can find time, luckily my family are always willing to try the results.
