Our People - James Bell, Manufacturing Apprentice

Here at Weetabix we can a spot talent when we see it, no matter what age, that’s why we have so much confidence in our apprentices. Weetabix ensures that our apprentices receive the best start to their careers by offering a supportive environment to work in that is designed to educate, motivate and inspire. We aim to give our apprentices a well-rounded view of the company, the skills to succeed in their role and knowledge to become future leaders at Weetabix. Meet James Bell, who is our Manufacturing Apprentice at Weetabix.

What’s your role?

As a manufacturing apprentice my role is very varied, allowing me to get involved in many different aspects of the business. Currently I have been tasked with maintenance planning up in AP7 which means that I plan all the works that go on during each shutdown. As there are three shutdowns every two weeks, I am very busy!

The role requires me to work with a variety of contractors and internal Weetabix teams, ensuring we deliver what is promised to the business to help drive improvement. I can be managing up to 40 contractors at any one shutdown day. The role comes with a lot of responsibility, such as always considering the safety of everyone involved, as well as the reliability of the plant. The most essential role I have is making sure I prioritise the most important work, allowing the plant to run.

How long have you been at Weetabix?

I have been at Weetabix for two years now. It has gone so fast and I have loved every single minute of working here. Every day is completely different and being part of such a large organisation really sets me up for a great future, in my opinion. For me to be in this position at my age and to have the influence and responsibility I do in such a big organisation is something that drives me every day.

What’s it like to work at Weetabix?

Working at Weetabix has really developed me as a person, allowing me to take ownership for my work. In what I am currently doing, maintenance planning, I would never have imagined to be doing so much at this early stage of my career. The people I work with are absolutely fantastic and I really look forward to coming into work each day.

What do you most enjoy about working at Weetabix?

I love the fact that there are no two days the same - there are always different challenges and opportunities.

But what I enjoy most about working at Weetabix is making a difference. I try to improve my skills and knowledge each day to ensure I’m helping us move forward and improve as a company.  It is so satisfying to think that, with every box we make, I contributed to producing it.

What opportunities have you had whilst at Weetabix?

Throughout my time at Weetabix I’ve had so many opportunities to be really involved in projects that, before working here, I could only imagine participating in. The management aspect of my current role is something which I’ve been able to take on due to the opportunities I’ve had whilst working here. Weetabix always looks to push people to be the best they can be.
