Gareth Turner, Head of Brand here at Weetabix speaks to us about creating more occasions for consumers to enjoy Weetabix, and the opportunities he has been given since joining the Weetabix family.
What’s your role?
I am Head of Brand here at Weetabix. My job is to develop the strategy and plans to profitably grow the brand for the long term. My role is to set the ambition and direction, and to make sure we are delivering world class branded activity.
The main way to do this, is to give more people more opportunities to buy a Weetabix product. This involves working with different stakeholders, including: my team to develop in year activation plans; third-party agencies to promote the brand through advertising; the sales and category teams to make sure we are creating a brand and subsequent activity that works for our customers; and the innovation team to grow the portfolio of products that sit within the Weetabix brand.
How long have you been at Weetabix?
I joined Weetabix on 2 June 2019. I’ve been fortunate enough to work on some famous brands in my past career, and I wanted that to continue. So, when I was approached about an opportunity at Weetabix, I jumped at the chance to meet the team to find out more.
What’s it like to work at Weetabix?
From the moment I arrived for my first interview I felt incredibly welcome. This is really important to me as I don’t live near Burton Latimer, which means pre-lockdown, I was staying away from home a lot during the week – so I definitely wanted to work somewhere that the people were welcoming.
There is a good amount of challenges - how can we do things bigger, faster or more effectively? Weetabix is a business that doesn’t rest on past achievements – which I find energising.
What do you most enjoy about working at Weetabix?
The people, the brand, the work.
Weetabix is a company that does things the “right way” – a business with a long-term ambition, which invests in its brands and people.
What opportunities have you had whilst at Weetabix?
Everyone in the business is approachable. I have had more access to the board in my first few months than at any other employer. They are interested in how we are growing the brands, and are consistently challenging, supportive and inspiring in equal measure.
Anything you’d like to share with us about your role?
Weetabix does marketing properly. And whilst we operate at pace, it’s not to the detriment of the work.
What do you love doing outside of work?
I have a young son who takes up a lot of my time outside work. I enjoy watching sport, and still hang on to my Crystal Palace season ticket even though I live 240 miles away! I love good food and eating out. Before my son was born, I ran a monthly pop up restaurant in my dining room.
